The Study On Subtitle Translation Of English Sitcoms Based On Schema Theory

Film and television programs play a vital role in promoting cultural exchanges between countries.In recent years,as cultural exchanges between China and foreign countries have deepened,a large number of foreign film and television programs have poured into the Chinese market.Naturally,Chinese subtitle translation has become an important part for Chinese audiences to understand foreign cultures.For English sitcoms,accurate and appropriate Chinese subtitle translation can not only make audiences happy,but also help audiences understand foreign cultures.Therefore,studying Chinese subtitle translation of English sitcoms facilitates cultural exchanges.This thesis attempts to study the Chinese subtitle translation of English sitcoms under schema theory,and provide practical strategies.schemata are cognitive structures existing in human brain as abstract background knowledge.Schema theory explains how people use existing schemata to understand new information.This thesis holds that it is appropriate to apply schema theory to the subtitle translation of sitcoms.The reason why sitcoms can bring joy to foreign audiences is because translators consciously activate audiences' existing schemata in subtitle translation,thus enabling audiences to interpret the humor conveyed by films.This thesis extracts "The Marvelous Mrs.Maisel" and "The Big Bang Theory" as examples to analyze their Chinese subtitle translation,and puts forward feasible strategies for Chinese subtitle translation based on schema theory.This thesis studies Chinese subtitle translation of film and television programs under schema theory.The author hopes to help subtitle translators adopt the most appropriate strategies to help Chinese audiences understand foreign cultures and enhance their viewing experience.Meanwhile,this thesis aims to attract more scholars to join in the research of Chinese subtitle translation,and also hopes that translators can focus on applying appropriate translation strategies,thus promoting intercultural exchanges.
