As one of leaders in garment art of Chinese movies, Tim Yip has cooperated with many directors producing many excellent works over 20 years since employment, obtaining numerous foreign and domestic awards for movies garment art designing. At the beginning in the circle of art, although he was aware of the globalization trend with prominent western art, he knew various cultures in the world shock and exchange just because of the progress of globalization, thus to generate new cultural pattern necessarily. The intellectual, extensive and profound eastern culture sees in rebirth and development opportunities. In the meantime, He realizes that, the unique development path for eastern art is: to explore flash points in combination with modern aesthetics from local traditional culture. By combining modern aesthetic idea with classical philosophical spirit, eastern classical imagery with western techniques, he creates the artistic image with eastern traditional cultural spirit and easily-accepted by modern people. Thus his new-orientalism view of art emerges at the right moment.This paper mainly studies his women garment art in ancient costume movies. By managing his new-orientalism view of art, studying the visual performance of women garment art in ancient costume movies in combination with that of movies’ functions, it derives the value of his women garment art in ancient costume movies. This embodies that win-win garment art and movies art is achieved with ancient women garment design. Also, traditional garment culture is carried forward in movie communication with the carrier of garment.Based on women garment art of Tim Yip in ancient costume movies, this paper is divided into four chapters. Firstly, the study intention of this paper and other basic information is discussed in the introduction. In the first chapter, starting from the creating process of ancient costume of Tim Yip, it especially puts forward his unique way of design—sketch. Then it explains his aesthetic concept in garment design—the forming process of new-orientalism view of art and illustrates utilization of such view of art.The second chapter, starting from his visual performance of women garment art in ancient costume movies, interprets his aesthetic thought, and starting from elements for garment design as: style, color, material and pattern, deeply analyzes how he creates garment modeling via the above elements.The third chapter mainly studies the effect of his women garment art in ancient costume movies on movies. It carries out study and analyzes from image shaping, influence on ambience, influence on overall style of movie and other aspects. By combing garment with movies, it analyzes that win-win is obtained between garment modeling and art of movies via women garment designing.The fourth chapter, based on previous chapters, explores the artistic value of his women garment in ancient costume movies. With the effect of garment, it seeks for its aesthetic value. It also reveals applying of his new-orientalism aesthetic thought to garment, manifesting national features, embodying national spirit, carrying forward traditional culture and awakening national emotions with the carrier of garment. Finally, it derives the enlightenment of his women garment design in ancient costume movies to this industry. His understanding of aesthetic concept system is of practical significance for movies garment designers guided to study and utilize. Thus the aim is to create more artistic image of eastern characteristics and achieve win-win between garment art and movies art. With the carrier of garment, national garment culture is presented in movie communication for contributing to carrying forward and inheriting traditional costume cultural spirit.
