Copyright has often been perceived predominantly and traditionally as a legal category in China. Surveying and measuring the economic contribution of copyright is a comparatively new topic. With the worldwide development of copyright industries, much more extensive attention has been attracted to copyright protection. What’s more, copyright industries have shaped the copyright legislation to some extent. The economic contribution of copyright industries in Australia well proves the important role they play in the Australian national economy. Like most developed countries, core copyright industries have a substantial contribution to Australian GDP. Copyright industries in Australia are closely connected with the rest of the economy and have an active presence in the economic cycle. The Australian government always attaches great importance to the study and operation of its copyright industries. In1905, Australia once led the way on copyright legislation. The term "Creative Industries" also has its origin from Australia. The first report concerning Australian economic contribution of the copyright industries was published in1981, standing at the forefront of research on copyright industries. The economic activities measured by copyright industries are based on respect for copyright and related rights, thus copyright protection has been an indispensable factor in the establishment and development of copyright industries over time.Historically, the principal recourse of Australian copyright law was simply to apply British enactments. And in the modern era, copyright protection and regulation regimes have been greatly involved in a complex framework of international bodies, multilateral conventions and foreign relations. Since the Cold War preponderantly influenced Australian foreign policy, Australian copyright law has been influenced indirectly by the American continuity of being a predominant player in the world economy, and directly as a consequence of the Australia-United States Free Trade Agreement. Nowadays, the intellectual property system in Australia is one of the world’s top ten. Australia also ranks highly for the comprehensiveness, transparency and relatively strong enforcement of copyright rights. It is hoped that this dissertation will assist communities, governments and policy makers in better understanding the significance of copyright industries as well as the evolving structure of Australia’s copyright legislation, so as to illuminate the formation and development of Chinese copyright industries and copyright protection.
