After the end of World WarⅡ,the bipolar structure of the United States and theSoviet Union has replaced the traditional Europe as the core of the world.In themilitary,the confrontation between the United States and the Soviet Union seems to bethe checks and balances between the US-led NATO and the Soviet-led WarsawPact.Europe has become the frontier area of the two camps’confrontation during theCold War,the European security has become an important problem of American coreinterests,the global strategy and the Cold War form.The Nixon administration,theUnited States is in a state of overseas strategic contraction,due to the deterioration ofAmerica’s international balance of payments and the dominant political pressure,tomake the Nixon Administration had to shift the occupied and dominant role in theNATO defense,trying to make western European Allies increasing their defensespending to share the United States’ burden of NATO defense.This article will exploreand analyze the relations of the United States and Europe in the Nixon Administrationin the perspective of NATO defense,roughly divided into three parts:The first part is the introduction part,mainly discussed the main basis of selectedtopic in this paper,the research status at home and abroad,the basis content andtheoretical and practical significance of the paper.The second part is the body part,divided into five chapters.The first chaptermainly looks back on the NATO defense between the United States and Europe beforethe Nixon Administration through the development process of NATO.Brieflyintroducing the establishment of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and its earlymilitary strategy,and tracing the evolution of NATO’s strategic course. The secondchapter expounds the reasons why America adjusts the pattern of European security inthe Nixon Administration.Mainly analyzes from four aspects:America’s relativedecline,limited ease of US-Soviet relations,the rising power of Europe and theweaking concept among alliances,and the world multi-polarization tendency.The thirdchapter is the focus of the full text,elaborating the defense battle between the UnitedStates and Europe in the Nixon Administration.Mainly introducing the U.S. militarypresence in Europe,and the problems existed in Western European allies of NATO,further analyzing the NATO’s defense debate between America andEurope.The fourth chapter is a controversial result between America and Europebased on the third chapter, namely the new blueprint construction for US-Europeanrelations.The fifth chapter is the analysis of US-European NATO defense in the NixonAdministration,further deepen the understanding of US-European relations under thebackground of the Cold War and after the Cold War,and the history and realityenlightenment bringing to China’s development.The third part is the conclusion part,mainly summarizes and concludes theUS-European NATO defense problems in the Nixon Administration from the macropoint of view.At the same time,this part points out that the NATO’s maintenanceneeds the alliance’s consolidation and the principle of strategic alliances,and doessome analysis on the NATO further development.
