China’s Status Seeking Strategy

The changing material capability distribution leads to various conflicts between the rising power and the system leader, and even the international order transformation.It is at the center of international politics research.Rising power’s interests concern is often in the form of status demand. Therefore, the extent to which the rising power achieves its goal on status reflects the extent to which the system accommodates the rising power.As the most prominent and active rising power in the world, China’s status demand has been, is being and will be paid considerable attention.We urgently need to choose a rational perspective to cognitive and pass this information:unique demands of China’s position; the other actors on China’s position and respond to the demands of interpretation; and the root causes of conflict where the demands of China’s position with existing order; China amendments to the established order of tendency; Chinese influence on the existing system.This article is intended to pursue through the Chinese position comb and explore strategic options, try to answer the above questions.We need to understand, analyze and convey such information from a more rational perspective. What is the distinctiveness of China’s status demand? How the other actors understand and respond to its status seeking? What is the substance of the conflicts between the rising power and system leader? Which factors contribute to such conflicts? Whether China has the tendency to revise existing international order? How will China influence the system? This thesis aims to answer the questions above through exploring China’s status seeeking strategies.This thesis will start from the social aspect of status and utilize the relevant theories about social identity to define and elaborate China’s dominant status seeking strategy in different historical period. It is trying to explore the potential rules which condition the status seeking strategy and the Chinese characteristics in the process of status seeking.The conclusions:Status seeking strategy is determined by openness and stability of the system,agreement with the dominant norm and the possibility of new norms.It is necessary and advantageous for China to carry out status creativity strateg.Whether status creativity strategy can continue and develop depends on:status-seeker’s ability to construct promising new norms,group members’high agreement with new norms,system leader’will and capability to contain the new norms.The motivation of China’s status seeking is rarely related with its prospection about material capability.It is more the reflection of aspiration for national rejuvenation. China’s distinctiveness as a status-seeker lies in its multi-identity. The qualification as a norm advocator,companions and followers for new norms,permission of and cooperation with system leager,exchange on the multilateral platform,offering China advantages in status creativity strategy.The rising China is challenging western international politics theory.lt is not only because of insufficient perception but also because of essential culture difference and conflict,while this particularity contributes to China’s identity construction and multi-discourse idea.
