The folk custom refers to the social habits and traditional customs, which is established by the people in long-term social and historical life practices, and often made a profound and lasting influence for people’s behavior as an unwritten norm. Changing the outmoded regulations and bad habits as well as old backward ideology, and at the same time, encouraging healthy values, moral standards, good public opinions on culture and social practices will play an important role in the development of society. Both the KMT and CPC had recognized that and campaigned for transforming social traditions during the 1930s and 40s. This thesis gives a comparative study of the movement of transforming folk custom between the KMT’s new life movement and CPC’s movement of changing habits and customs. This thesis puts emphasis on the variance analysis of the different social life views between the KMT and the CPC’s movement, as well as the evaluation and their contemporary enlightenment of the movement of transforming folk custom.The introduction part mainly introduces the background of selected topic, research reviews and methods of the thesis. It also explains some research innovations in the thesis.Chapter 1 tries to make analysis of the Kuomintang’s New Life Movement which involves its reason, specific policies and results. Chapter 2 tries to analyze the CPC’s Movement of Changing Habits and Customs, which includes its background, measures and results.Chapter 3 tries to make comparative analysis on the different social life views between the KMT’s New Life Movement and the CPC’s movement of changing habits and customs. It argues that the mainly difference of movement of transforming folk custom between the CPC and the KMT is due to their social life views.Chapter 4 tries to evaluate the KMT’s New Life Movement and the CPC’s movement of changing habits and customs from the perspective of historical influences and practical experience. It proves that both the KMT’s New Life Movement and the CPC’s movement of changing habits and customs played an important role in changing social traditions, which offers a referential perspective for transforming folk custom.Chapter 5 tries to summarize the contemporary enlightenment of the KMT’s New Life Movement and the CPC’s movement of changing habits and customs. The thesis argues that to reform folk custom needs to closely connect to China’s reality, based on the guidance of Marxism and improve the quality of the Social Life, and to develop the advanced culture. And also, changing habits and customs is beneficial to general social conduct and build a harmonious society.
