Before world war ii, because of the deeply the influence of traditional isolationism and the edge position of southeast Asia in American foreign policy, Southeast Asia was the region of American people knowing the least and the Southeast Asia Studies is very weak. Prodded by the Second World War, Southeast Asia Studies in the United State have started to take a shape. After the outbreak of the Cold war, the Southeast Asia region became the "middle ground" of United States and the Soviet Union. Attribute to the joint efforts of federal government, private foundations, and the scholars, Southeast Asian studies in the United States grew rapidly and reach a peak during the Vietnam war. Southeast Asian studies in the United States become a part of the American cold war strategy, with a strong color of the cold war, and the modernization theory has become the dominant mode and the framework; After the Vietnam war, declining status in the American diplomatic strategy in southeast Asia, the federal government and private foundations for regional research cuts and the Vietnam war caused by the long-term debate about academic and political, all of these factors lead to the "crisis" of Southeast Asian studies. According to the process of Southeast Asian studies in the United States, we know that knowledge is difficult to away from the politics.
