In the history of philosophy, freedom, the most basic philosophical concept butmost difficult to explain and understand. What is the connotation and essence offreedom? Man explores it throughout the long history of human beings. To someextent, freedom influenced, even determined the occurrence and development ofmany historical events. With the constant progress of the human society, freedomalso increasingly reflects its importance, which requires people to continuouslyexpand the depth and breadth of concept of freedom. However, the elaboration offreedom is various in different historical stages. Thus, how to understand the conceptof freedom in order to adapt to the social development?With the rapid development of human society, the human society has beenexperiencing an unprecedented era of globalization. Western liberalism graduallydeepens the influence on the whole thought and theory area. Facing the rise ofscholars’ study about Berlin’s two concepts of freedom recently, this paper aims todevote to current society by analyzing comparatively Berlin’s two concepts offreedom and Marxian view of liberty.The first chapter mainly introduces the purpose and significance of study and thespecific content of study, including the review of Berlin’s view of liberty andMarxian view of liberty at home and abroad, research methods and researchinnovation.The second chapter describes elaborately formation background, theoreticalorigin, content and basic characteristics of Berlin’s view of liberty and Marxian viewof liberty. Research on issues should be traced back to its origin, therefore the secondchapter begins with formation background and theoretical origin. Both of formationbackground are elaborated from the respective of the era and personal factors, whereas theoretical origin of Berlin’s view of liberty regards the main characters asclue; Marxian view of liberty is mainly studied by the method of historical analysis.Understanding the origins of both views of liberty, the content of freedom isdiscussed specifically, including the basic concept and the basic characteristics,namely the internal uniqueness of the two theories.The chapter3analyzes comparatively Berlin’s view of liberty and Marxianview of liberty in terms of value orientation. Compared with other views of liberty,the uniqueness of Berlin’s view of liberty, namely multi-element value orientation, isfirst pointed out. Then the “man-centered” value orientation of Marxian view ofliberty is discussed.The Chapter4discusses Berlin’s view of liberty using stand, viewpoint, andmethod of Marxian view of liberty, and elaborates that Berlin did not completefreedom to specify beyond Marx’s concept of freedom. Finally it points out thecontemporary significance of Marxian view of liberty. This chapter is also the staypoint of this paper.
