Hong Kong has experienced dramatic social change since the date of its inception. Before the handover, Hong Kong was a special community outside the home country. On the level of cultural and historical, although Hong Kong’s culture contains some of the cultural characteristics of both China and the West in the conflict, compromise, resistance and communion with the British colonists more than a century, it was not accepted by both sides. In the world map, Hong Kong was a city but has no nationality. It was a vague between China and the West, and cannot find its place. In return transitional period, the wandering sense of do not know where to go is the mainstream collective psychology in the former Hong Kong society before the year of 1997. Hong Kong people were anxious to face the imminent change of identity and ascription. The year of 1997 brought widespread panic and anxiety to the people of Hong Kong. However, Hong Kong’s identity becomes sensitive under the differences between the two ideologies after return. It seems to a lot of people who do not understand the history and development of Hong Kong that Hong Kong people are elusive. Sometimes Hong Kong people are very passionate for the things, such as provide disaster relief when China has a disaster and defend territory. And sometimes they will keep a distance from the mainland deliberately. Most Hong Kong people have this complex psychology.Due to the special historical and geographical reasons, Hong Kong people have obvious vague on their own identity. Hong Kong is a region that has multiple cultures. Hong Kong people are easy to generate a sense of urgency and a sense of identity crisis under the impact of heterogeneous cultures. This makes the author have an idea to take the issue of Hong Kong people’s identity as the thesis subject and to make a detailed and depth analysis. As a kind of mass media, movie is a mirror of real life. It plays the role of cultural carrier and value spread in social life. The dissemination and acceptance of information is an important way for people to determine self-identity and play a huge role in the construction of collective memory and collective identity. Nostalgic information can cause people to think about social life in particular, and then people will pursue their identity. For this reason, the author consider to take Hong Kong nostalgic movies as the research sample in this paper, which directly reflect the psychological state, living environment and cultural traditions of Hong Kong people.The introduction chapter briefly introduces the historical background of Hong Kong, the situation about Hong Kong nostalgic film and the related research status at home and abroad. From the current study, to analyze the problem of Hong Kong people’s identity in Hong Kong film with sociological perspective is of great significance. It is an attempt to combine sociological theory and film analysis. Then the author introduces the method of this study, summarizes the theory of community and the theory of identity, and defines the related concepts.The second chapter describes the changes of Hong Kong people’s identity from Hong Kong nostalgic movies under the historical vicissitude. Three kinds of comparatively clear identity are given in this paper. And the development history of Hong Kong society in the 20th century also introduced so that the change of Hong Kong people’s identity have a clear change process. After the elucidation of the three kinds of identity, the representative films are taken as analytical samples and the method of case analysis is used to analyze the identity. It can be seen that the nostalgic object of Hong Kong films just fit the connotation of Hong Kong people’s identity.The third part explains gray areas of the three kinds of identity showing in the Hong Kong nostalgic movies. At first, this paper argues that the three kinds of clear identity tendencies are expressed in the performance of Hong Kong nostalgia movies but also reflects the complexity of the Hong Kong people’s identity. Especially the period of return, as an important turning point in the history of Hong Kong, has had a profound impact on Hong Kong in all aspects. Consequently, the author discusses the dilemma of Hong Kong people’s identity and presented to the reader through the specific films. The second, in these gray areas, Hong Kong people show confused mood and mental stress for their own identity. Thus then analyzes the reasons of Hong Kong people’s identity difficulties in Hong Kong nostalgic movies.The fourth chapter is the author’s sociology thinking in the process of research, includes social change, social interaction and social functions in three aspects. First, under the social and historical changes, Hong Kong people’s identity is changing, and the change is associated with Hong Kong’s social background. The dilemmas of Hong Kong people’s identity and the entire social environment are also inseparable. Second, self-identity and social identity constitute the identity of Hong Kong people, both of which are done through social interaction. Third, the social functions of identity promote Hong Kong nostalgic movies rebuild the imagined community for Hong Kong people, and bring a sense of belonging. Consequently, people create a new identity and the tendency to integrate with the nation is quite obvious.
