Research On The National Identity Of Hong Kong People Since Its Return To China

National identity refers to citizens’ cognition of the country and the evaluation of the country’s political,ethnic,cultural and other constituent elements.National identity is an important political resource and the social psychological basis of the legitimacy of modern national political system as well.In present era,with the development of globalization,the rise of multiculturalism and the escalation of ethnic conflicts,the issue of national identity has become more and more important.Especially for China,which implements “One Country Two Systems”.Hong Kong people’s recognition of the country is not only related to Hong Kong’s future,but also directly related to national security and stability.Since the return of Hong Kong,the central government has strictly adhered to the principle of “One Country Two Systems,Hong Kong people ruling Hong Kong and a high degree of autonomy”,and has not interrupted in Hong Kong’s affairs,so that the Hong Kong people can truly be the masters of their own affairs.In addition,the central government has repeatedly helped Hong Kong tide over difficulties and implemented a series of friendly policies to Hong Kong.Hong Kong people are full of confidence in “One Country Two Systems” and their assessment of the country has improved.However,in recent years,due to the influence of international Anti-China forces and the ideological trend of “Hong Kong Independence”,some Hong Kong people has frequently challenged the bottom line of the principle of “One Country Two Systems” and endangered national security.The national identity of Hong Kong people has encountered setbacks.There are complex reasons for the problems of Hong Kong people’s national identity since the return to China.Firstly,the impact of British colonial rule on Hong Kong.Secondly,the work of national identity education in the Hong Kong SAR is insufficient after the return.Thirdly,the interference of various forces disturbing Hong Kong and international Anti-China forces.To solve the problems with national identity in Hong Kong people requires a variety of measures.Institutionally,we must strengthen the dominant position of “one country” and safeguard national sovereignty and security.In terms of education,we need to strengthen patriotism education and history education in the whole of Hong Kong,establish the core position of “patriotism and love Hong Kong” in Hong Kong value,and cultivate Hong Kong people’s feelings of family and country,as well as the sense of belonging.In terms of culture,Hong Kong SAR Government carry forward Chinese traditional culture,stimulate the resonance of Hong Kong people with Chinese culture by feeling the unique charm of Chinese culture,and promote all-round and in-depth cultural exchanges between Hong Kong and the mainland and construct the leading values and unite the consensus of Hong Kong people with the“Chinese dream”.Legally,we must further improve the relevant rule of law system,solve the shortcomings of Hong Kong’s legal system and implementation mechanism,and make up for the legal loopholes in Hong Kong’s national security.
