Freedom As Non-domination

After a research on ideas of Freedom, Philip Pettit discovered a historical change of understandings of Freedom——from freedom as non-domination (under the Republicanism) to freedom as non-interference (under the Liberalism). Pettit got a sympathetic understanding of this change, yet still found something wrong behind it. And thus built his theories of Freedom as non-domination.Along with the construction of his theories (theories of Freedom as non-domination), there is always a comparison with freedom of Liberalism. Firstly, Pettit represents the difference between those two kinds of Freedoms. Secondly, Pettit emphasizes the superiority (of freedom as non-domination) over the latter one.Both of these two viewpoints encountered with critiques or doubts. Pettit himself responded part of those blames, while some problems still remain unsolved. This paper is aimed at representing this debate over Freedom-——exploiting the backgrounds, reconstituting the argue, and trying to propose some possible solutions or suggestions.
