Luo Longji’s Democratic Thought

As a famous democratic personage in the Republic of China, Luo Longji devoted his whole life to pursuing democratic life. He explored the concept, the principles and the form of democracy and integrated them into Chinese and Western culture, so as to pursued the true meaning of democracy and desire. He combined his democratic ideas with human rights, the rules of law and other theories.He criticized reality, opposed to force, and promoted peaceful politics, which shows distinctive features. The core of his democratic thoughts was realized by the philosophy of democratic life. The essence of the philosophical life of democracy lied in the protection of the necessary conditions for the human being. In order to realize the realization of democracy, he advocated political democracy and economic democracy. On the one hand, he advocated the implementation of multi-party and parliamentary system, improved the constitutional rules of law, and strengthened the local self-government; on the other hand, he advocated the combination of planning and market, strengthened government intervention so as to achieve economic freedom and equality. Luo Longji aimed to combine the political democracy of Britain, the United States and other countries with the economic democracy of the Soviet Union’s to establish a full authentic Chinese style democracy, in order to pursue the ideal of human being.His democratic thoughts in the Republic of China intellectuals caused repercussions, enriched the lineages of Republic of China modern political ideology, aroused the people’s enthusiasm for democracy, and promoted the process of democratization in modern China. However, his thoughts also had obvious limitations. On the one hand, Lou Longji had failed to consider the connotation of the relevant theory, resulting in the contradictions of his own theory. Meanwhile, he didn’t have a good command of logic deduction and traceability on the introduced values, which led to shallow theory and other problems. On the other hand, Lou Longji’s democratic thoughts exists practical difficulties. For example, his thoughts displays a poor combination of the theory with practice.Generally speaking, Luo Longji’s democratic thoughts in the modern democratization process played an important role in democracy, human rights, and the discussion the value of law rules. He attempted to reconcile Chinese and Western culture, which was useful for reference now. Specifically, firstly, we should pay attention to the democracy and rule of law building and continue perfecting the system of people’s congress as well as the system of multiparty cooperation and political consultation under the leadership of the Communist Party. Secondly, in terms of economic reform, we should bring the policy of a combination of the planned and the market economics into force.
