This thesis looks at the past dating back to the 1800’s and the present of China’s foreign relations with the countries situated in the Caribbean region. Through the comprehensive review of the past and present of these relations we can look into the future prospects of China’s presence in the Caribbean region. This study will explore the past relationship between China and the various Caribbean countries. It will also look at the present relationship between the two regions and the fields in which China are making moves to strengthen relations. These fields include:political, economical, social & cultural, peace, security and judicial affairs. Although primarily, Chinese relations with the countries in the Caribbean region was not as prominent, This is mainly due to the tug-of-war between the People’s Republic of China sand the Taipei as they both had influence within the expanse of the Caribbean. However with the extensive growth China has experienced in its own country, the present day shows China becoming more influential in the Caribbean region. Today majority of the countries within the Caribbean are tied to China and have cut all ties with Taipei and in doing so they have welcomed China into their countries. Though it has not come with some unsettlement from local people in several of the Caribbean countries where Chinas presence is very evident.ie Jamaica and the Bahamas. China currently has various projects in all areas of the countries development possibility and is working to introduce and imprint themselves firmly with all the countries in the Caribbean. The future looks for the Caribbean looks bright and fruitful though there will be many challenges along the way. This study explores the push towards meaningful discussions between China and heads of state and government officials within the Caribbean region.-These talks aim to achieve more comprehensive relations and bilateral relations between China and the Caribbean. It discusses the various ways in which China is implementing and influencing the relations in all fields:political, economic, cultural& social, peace security and judicial. China’s future aims are clear as to what they wish to gain out of their support to the Caribbean region. In looking at the current efforts that have already been afforded to several of these countries i.e. Chinese projects on the island include the construction of the Dominica State College, the State House, and a housing program, under a USD 14 million loan agreement. Along with grants such as the example given above many other projects are in line with several of the other Caribbean countries. Several Caribbean countries also have implemented Confucius programs. It is evident that China is becoming a popular and much talked about topic worldwide and in this case the Caribbean islands. I believe that their presence will continue to augment faster than slower. The outcome is uncertain however from evidence seen it s in my opinion that the two regions, China and the Caribbean will have success.
