Under the background of the fast development of China’s society and economy, and in the context of urban renovation and renewal, there are a series of problems incommercial streets, such as the convergence of the characteristics, the fragmentationof the interface, and the dehumanization of space using, etc.Based on the reflection ofthese current problems, this paper made case study of Hexiang West Road in Xiamen, and focused on the interaction relationship between the edge space of commercialstreets and people’s activities, try to find the space factor which activate the street.Firstly, this article summarized the background of the research on the edge spaceof commercial streets, discoursed the main issues about the space and activities, andestablished the research framework of them on the basis of literature review andtheoretical research.Secondly, it is the theoretical groundwork. The article extractedinvestigate factors from the study of commercial streets in three dimensions. Tryingto start from the investigate factors, the author divided Hexiang West Road into10study sections, made specific quantitative analysis of the activities happened in theedge space of commercial streets, combining with the study factors, made a lateralcomparison between10sections, what is more, analyzed the space attributes whichhave the strongest impact on behavior and activities from several different evaluationdimensions. Finally, based on the analysis, this paper summarized the impact whichthe characteristics of spatial elements had on behavior, and the specific requirementsof the edge space of streets which the generation of activities called for, and madeseveral suggestions aimed at the construction of Hexiang West Road and gave someuseful advices to the follow-up study of the related subject.
