Reading is not only the most important purpose of language leaning but also the most importantmeans of language learning. So both the teachers and students in senior middle school attach greatimportance to reading. However, for most students, their achievements in reading comprehension are notsatisfying, especially for students from remote countryside senior middle schools. According to thequestionnaire investigation, the author found that the main factor leading to this phenomenon is thatlearners can not grasp and use reading strategy properly to guide their reading comprehension. So thisthesis intends to make an attempted study of English reading strategy training in countryside seniormiddle schools in order to find whether students’ reading comprehension can be improved efficiently afterthey get trained in reading strategy. In the present study,95senior three students who almost came from countryside were chosen as thesubjects from class4&9in JingNing No.2Middle School. Class9is the controlled class while Class4isthe experimental class. Based on the results of the questionnaire investigation on the students’ readingstrategy, the reading strategy training was performed in experimental class for16weeks from September2012to January2013, while in the controlled class, the conventional reading teaching method(grammar-translation method) was conducted. The data were collected from the students’ questionnaireinvestigation on reading strategy, pre-test and post-test in reading. And all the data were calculated bySPSS (Statistical Program for Social Science)13.0. The statistic results indicate that the students canobtain effective reading strategies after reading strategy training, and that effective reading strategies canhelp students improve their reading achievements. The statistic results also show that the students’reading performance and their self-study ability in English reading after the strategy training have beenimproved markedly than those of the students in controlled class.
