Research On Anxi’s Overseas Chinese And Its Modern Education

Anxi is located in Southern Fujian,to the northwest of Xiamen,Zhangzhou andQuanzhou which are called Golden Triangle.It is also located in the upstream of theJinjiang River,to the east of Nanan, against the west of Huaan,to the South ofChangtai county,adjacent to the north of Yongchun.Anxi has a long history ofOverseas Chinese,which is the main area of Overseas Chinese hometown in Fujianprovince.Anxi has attached great importance to the development of education.Famousscholars in history such as Li Guangdi, Lin Sihuan are from Anxi.Since the moderntimes,the people of Anxi trapped,education is relatively backward,people weresuffered deeply.Many Overseas Chinese felt the backward hometown education andhave returned hometown to establish schools,to develop the education as their ownresponsibility.Anxi’s origin of Overseas Chinese running schools experienced earlystage,slow development stage,rapid development stage.The Overseas Chinesedonated school showed different characteristics in each period.The embryonic stage(1912-1949),the Overseas Chinese mainly donated and founded schools,mostlyconcentrated in the township of large Overseas Chinese,Penglai Town,GuanqiaoTown,Longmen Town,Longjuan Town etc.Because of the founding and developmentof Overseas Chinese schools in remote towns,the children received a goodeducation,at the same time, the area near the schools had gradually become themarket centers,changed the social environment of Overseas Chinesehometown,promoted the Overseas Chinese society.Slow development stage(1949-1976),the majority of Overseas Chinese schools were taken over by thegovernment,some Overseas Chinese schools were still run by Overseas Chinese,andthey built a number of school buildings. But because of the impact of the CulturalRevolution,the Overseas Chinese endowed schools rarely. Rapid development stage(1976-),after the Reform and Opening-up,the Overseas Chinese policies have beenimplemented,especially after the implementation of Overseas Chinese of privatesaving policy since1984,the schools set up by Overseas Chinese had resumed theoriginal school names,and stimulated the Overseas Chineses’ feeling of lovinghometown,set off the upsurge of running schools. From the Republic of Chinal stage’s initial,New China to the CulturalRevolution stage’s weakness and the Reform and Opening-up stage’s rapiddevelopment,from these we found the history of Anxi’s Overseas Chinese donatedschool deeply influenced by the China policies on Overseas Chinese Affairs andinternational and domestic environment.Anxi Overseas Chinese brought the conceptof advanced education through schools,opened people’s wisdom,changed the socialstructure of hometown,promoted the development of the society.Overseas Chinese’leave without leaving home’,did not live in Anxi,but more than like the people ofAnxi.This article focuses on Guanqiao Town,and Longmen Town in which most ofOverseas Chinese live and founded many primary and middle schools.It aims to seekthe typical features of persistence of its running schools,its normative organizationoperation management and the openess of operation.Cultivation Middle School is aprimary school set up in the support of big families and Overseas Chinese.LanxiMiddle School is an achievement of Overseas Chinese.Peiwen School relys on thepower of one, behind it are many Overseas Chinese and domestic friends supporting.The contribution in schooling from Anxi’s Overseas Chinese is a concrete reflectionof the spirit of patriotic love township of selfless dedication.This kind of spirit callson generations of Overseas Chinese to the practice of improving the nation anddeveloping the nation by education.The Supports and dedication to the ancestral hometown from Overseas Chineseeducation are ongoing.Dating from the Qing dynaty, to the Republic of China,up tothe People’s Republic of China,their support and delication keep continuing,whichthis special population of Overseas Chinese are affected to leave without leavinghometown,leading to promote the progress in their hometowns.With the upgrading ofthe industrial structure in Anxi,the becoming community tradition of donating fundsfrom Anxi’s Overseas Chinese,the spirit have a profound impact on the indigenouspeople,and many successful business people upholding the spirit of selflessdedication of Overseas Chinese to invest and donat their hometown’s education withgreat enthusiasm.How to improve or promote the power of Anxi local society’s selfupdating progress with this spirit?That is the same as how to improve education. Therefore,the college entrance examination in the past years basically changed Anxifrom the poor and backward situation to a new stage of development.The paper associates the development and change of education in modern Anxiwith Anxi’s Overseas Chinese closely,and explores the Anxi’s Overseas Chinese’unique contribution in the history of modern education in Anxi by means ofcombining historical anthropology and the data analysis.
