In China more and more students are learning English. Reading is a basic skillfor them to learn a foreign language. It plays a dominant role among the four skills inthe learning of a foreign language. For ESL readers, to some extent, English readingability can reflect their English level Although it is re^rded as the core and ofcus ofEnglish teaching in high schools, and the reform of English curriculum has beenimplemented all the time, there is little change in the English teaching of senior highschool. Especially, reading items are the major content in the college entranceexamination, which is the biggest obstacle to get high scores for most students.Therefore, it is of great urgency to research and explore the rules and methods ofteaching reading in senior high schoolThis paper uses the research methods with combination of theoretical researchand errpirical research, including: literature research, questionnaires, interviews,classroom observation and so forth to understand the current situation in the course ofhigh school English reading teaching and learning in China as well as reasons behindthat. It is found out that most of the current high school English reading teaching isgiven priority to the traditional grammar translation method and teacher-centeredmodel, thereofre students’ interest and ability in reading corrprehension are relativelyinsufficient.Based on the results of the theoretical basis and practical research, this study putforward the specific strategies and practical implementation methods about improvingEnglish reading teaching in senior high schools. Teachers should pay attention to thedirectivity of cultural background knowledge, the dominance of macroscopicdiscourse structure analysis and the fundamentality of microscopic language pointanalysis. Then, the writer explained the specific suggestions of English readingteaching rfom the aspects of grammatical cohesion and lexical cohesion in detail. It isaimed at cultivating students’ good reading habits and making students treat the textwith whole consciousness. This study combined the texts in senior high school English books and some other classic examples of cohesive discourse to interpret howto apply cohesion theory to English reading teaching, which provides reference ofr thesenior high school English teachers’ teaching.Finally, the author summarized the main ifndings of the study and put ofrwardthe disadvantages existing in the research and the direction of flirther efofrts in thefuture.Considering the importance of reading comprehension, the problems in highschool English reading instruction and the limitations of the related research, thisstudy is quite necessary and significant.
