To learn English well, it is necessary for students to master a certain number of words.And vocabulary teaching and learning is of course an indispensable part of English teachingand learning. After the reform of the New Curriculum, middle school students are required tomaster more words than before. According to New English Curriculum Standard which waspublished by Education Department of China in2011, the junior middle school students arerequired to master the usage of1500-1600words,200-300phrases after finishing juniormiddle school. Nevertheless, it’s difficult for some students to realize the goal. They don’t dowell in pronouncing, spelling and comprehending these words and phrases, let aloneimproving their competence of communication. The main reason is that the teaching ofvocabulary in some classes is very dull and abstract, and the students have no interest inlearning vocabulary, so they could not cooperate with the teachers actively. To be an Englishteacher, it is our job to find out a good technique for our students to learn English vocabularyefficiently. The paper holds the idea of applying classroom games in English vocabularyteaching in junior middle school.This paper starts with the importance and the present situation of vocabulary teachingand learning, then it introduces the significance of putting classroom games to use invocabulary teaching. Secondly, it further analyzes the importance of classroom games invocabulary teaching according to the motivation theory, constructivist learning theory and thepsychological characteristics of junior middle school students. Before using classroom gamesin vocabulary teaching, teachers need to choose suitable classroom games for presentation, practice and production on the basis of the four principles. Then use the classroom gameschosen to present, practice and review words. At last, the teachers can use interview toinvestigate the effectiveness of applying classroom games in vocabulary teaching. Accordingto the results of the interview, we can see that using classroom games in English vocabularyteaching could not only make vocabulary teaching lively and interesting, but also stimulatestudents’ learning enthusiasm and interest. Students also hope their teachers can use moreclassroom games in vocabulary teaching and even in other stages of language teaching so asto help them learn English efficiently.
