The Use Of English Language Learning Strategies

Nowadays, the focus of the research on English teaching has shifted from teachers’teaching to students’learning. As it is known to all, whether a student can learn English well or not has a close connection with his learning methods. Therefore, it is of great significance to study students’learning strategies. Since English teaching in primary and high schools in Shanghai is in the leading position in China, it is of great value to conduct a research on the junior high school students’English learning strategies in Shanghai.First of all, the author defines the core concepts, summarizes the different classifications of basic learning strategies in this research, and determines the theoretical basis in this thesis. Then, the author designs the Questionnaire of Junior Middle School Students’English Learning Strategies based on Rebecca Oxford’s Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL) and Hortwiz’Belief about Language Learning Inventory. The writer adopts the questionnaire to investigate the selected school students from three junior middle schools in three districts, and then analyzes the data from the questionnaire survey. Third, on the basis of theoretical research and empirical research, the author puts forward the following suggestions on how to make better use of and develop students’ English learning strategies:teachers can stimulate students’motivation in the classroom by creating a better atmosphere; teachers should help students to set clear learning goals, and encourage them to form autonomous learning habits; teachers can encourage students to help each other in English learning, thus stimulating under-achieving students’interest in learning English.
