According to understanding about Five Writing Standards of English CurriculumStandards and discover that English Curriculum Standards requires students in Grade9should reach five writing standards. Among those standards, we can find out that thereis a standard about using common conjunctions to describe the sequence and logicalrelations. And it proves that students in Grade9of Compulsory Education should usecommon conjunctions rightly in their compositions, and it highlight the importance ofcohesion in their compositions. The thesis is aimed to analyze students’ compositionsand expectes to find out the usage of cohesion, hopes to give some references andadvices in English writing teaching by understanding the Five Writing Standards.The thesis, is based on the cohesion theories of Halliday&Hasan and the formerrelated researches on conjunctions, is aime to analyze the usage of conjunctions inEnglish writing of students in Grade9. Based on the goal of using commonconjunctions to describe sequence and logical relationships in English CurriculumStandards, the author designes a describing writing and do a test on students. Thencollectes their compositions and discusses the usage of conjunctions, it is aim to detectwhether the students have reached the goal of using common conjunctions to describesequence and logical relationships in English Curriculum Standards by combined withthe scoring standards about High School Entrance Exam of Chongqing City.According to the discovery, the author finds that the conjunctions are in an unevendistribution in students’ compositions. What they use mostly is supplementaryconjunctions and sequence conjunctions, which proves that students are lack ofconjunctions and they usually use or what they have knew in their compositions. Themostly common conjunctional words are “and”,“because” and “so” in theircompositions. Although students should have a big progress on using cohesion, theresearch findings show that most of the students in Grade9have reached the goal. Dueto the disadvantages about the usage of cohesion in students’ compositions, teachersshould pay more attention to training students’ right writing attitude, and to training students’ English thinking patterns and the interpretation of discourse cohesion. Onlychanges can help students with improving English writing skills.
