The society today is a rapidly developing information age. Communicationtechnology, computer technology and new media emerge in endlessly, but the mostbooming and popular one is definitely social network. During its development ofseveral years, due to its own characteristics and functions, it has gained greatpopularity all around the world quickly and its attraction and influence are growingwith each passing day. College students are the main group that uses social network asthe new stage for information acquisition, emotional expression, interpersonalcommunication, self presentation and social participation. There is no doubt thatsocial network has a big influence on college students’ personality factors, such ascognition, emotion, character and behavior. As we all know, personality developmentis of great importance to college students, healthy personality is the key to thefoundation of their living and growing up. Under the new situation, the government,colleges, the ideological and political educators should make good use of the newopportunities and coping with the new challenges which bring about both by socialnetwork, and actively develop and utilize social network on college students’personality education by excreting its positive influences and inhibiting its negativeinfluences maximizely so as to promote the formation and development of collegestudents’ healthy personality.The preface mainly introduces the foundation and significance, research status athome and abroad, main research contents and research methods of this paper.The main body of this paper includes three parts.Part I is the overview of related concepts. It mainly summarizes and expounds theconcept and characteristics of social network; the connotation and characteristics ofpersonality, college students’ personality characteristics, the main factors influencing the development of college students’ personality; the meaning of healthy personalityand its standards; the functions of social network on personality development.Part II, mastering first-hand data through questionnaires, then analyses the use ofsocial network among college students’ under present situation and the influences ofsocial network on their cognition, interpersonal communication, emotion and socialparticipation, and then summarizes and states its positive influences on collegestudents’ personality development, such as active thinking and improvement for self-awareness and self-value, enhancing college students’ sense of participation andresponsibility, expanding channels of college students’ emotional catharsis, improvingcollege students’ interpersonal communication. Regarding negative effects, socialnetwork leads to college students’ cognitive confusion and biases, easily causes thelack of real emotional experience and an unfavorable environment for qualityeducation and behavior anomie. And then the writer makes the analysis of the reasonsof the negative impacts, including the drawbacks of the social network itself, a lack ofproper social network regulation, insufficient social network development andutilization of the colleges and the low level of college students’ media literacy.The third part brings about the countermeasures from the country, the college andcollege students themselves of how to utilize social network to foster and shapecollege students’ personality by avoiding and reducing its negative influences as wellas exerting and expanding its positive influences on the development of collegestudents’ personality. This chapter contains three parts: The state should improvesocial network regulation to create good social network environment for collegestudents’ personality development; colleges should attach great importance to socialnetwork use to play a guiding role for college students’ personality development; college students should improve their overall quality to provide inner guarantee forthe development of their own personality.
