| According to the new curriculum standard of junior middle school, English teaching in middle schools should not only pay attention to students’learning results, also should pay attention to the learning process, which demands that to some extent our English teaching should carry out large-scale reforms in order to meet the needs of a new age. Formative assessment is a process evaluation. With the feedback from teachers and students of the combination of student self-assessment, peer assessment and teacher’s assessment, we can obtain reflection data to improve teaching. The evaluation studies on English teaching conducted by educationists and linguists both at home and abroad have a long history, and the application of formative evaluation in English teaching has made remarkable achievements. The previous studies are mainly formative assessment aimed at English teaching generally, but there is a lack of research on specific fields like the teaching of English vocabulary, where our study makes a major supplement in this respect. This research selected88students in total from Grade2of natural class of Qiaonan Middle School in Tianshui City, Gansu Province, and there were45students in the experimental class which consisted of23boys and22girls; there are43students in the control class, including20boys and23girls. Experimental class and control class were adopted. The experiment lasted from the end of September2012to early June2013, the vocabulary teaching of formative assessment had been conducted for20weeks, and the experimental teaching effects were compared through the ways of questionnaire survey and vocabulary test. The author found that: through the questionnaire surveys and the data analysis gained from the tests before and after the experiment, we can see that the application of formative assessment in English vocabulary teaching not only increased the students’interest in English vocabulary learning, but also helped them to improve scores in it.
