Survey On The Awareness Of English Culture Of Senior High School Studengts

The Ministry of national education has promulgated “Basic Education Curriculum Reform (Trial)” in2001, which marks that the new curriculum reform of basic education has comprehensively launched. In2003, the Ministry of national education regarded the cultural awareness as one of the senior Englishcurriculum standards in “English curriculum standards of ordinary high school”(Standards). People paymore attention to the cultural awareness from then on.The study regards English teachers and students in Xinxiang Railway High School as research objects,and studied the current situation about cultivation of students’ cultural awareness through questionnairesurvey, classroom observation and teacher interviews.The research proposes two questions:1）How is the current situation about cultivation of high school students’ cultural awareness?2）What are the factors that affect cultivation of high school students’ cultural awareness?The findings of research indicate that although English teachers and students in high school haverealized the importance of cultural awareness, attention is still inadequate. Finally, there are five actors thataffect cultivation of students’ cultural awareness: teacher’s conception, the society environment of teaching,teaching materials, cultural literacy of teacher and testing. In order to cultivate high school students’cultural awareness, writer makes three suggestions.This research consists5chapters. The first chapter is the introduction which concerns the researchbackground, research significance and the structure of thesis. The second chapter is literature review. Itincludes the definitions and classifications of culture, relationship between culture and language, thedefinition of cultural awareness, researches on the cultivation of cultural awareness and culture teaching.The third chapter is research design which includes research problems, research objects, research methodsand research procedure. The fourth chapter is research results and analysis. The final chapter is conclusionwhich includes research findings, relevant suggestions and limitations of research.
