When English language students answer questions in class, teachers need to give feedback in order to motivate and encourage their students. This study examines the differences in the feedback given in two primary schools, one in China and one in America. Using classroom observations, interviews, questionnaires, and reflective journals, this study will reflect on the following three points:· Current use of teacher to student feedback in primary classrooms· Differences between Chinese and English teachers’feedback· Potential solutions to current problems of teacher appraisalsAccording to the research, the form of Chinese teacher appraisals is relatively simple. Many Chinese teachers are confused about whether to do the appraisals in Chinese or English. American teachers employ encouragement as the main method of delivering appraisals, while Chinese teachers prefer to appraise their students’ answers directly. Chinese and American teachers view teacher appraisals as playing an important role in promoting students’learning interests and optimizing teaching management. To maintain students’enthusiasm for learning, teachers need to improve their language proficiency continuously and ask questions related to the students’ answers.
