A school motto,written in students handbooks or curved on the stones,is more than a part of auniversity culture,it also express the essence of the university.What a shool motto contain is thephilosophical thinking about how to cultivate students and what students it cultivate.A school motto is theconcentrated interpretation of university ideas.A school motto reflects the core values of university andinfluences students and teachers imperceptibly.Different school mottoes that originate from classics orfrom political slogans or from inscription of celebrities have their own certain history and significance.Aschool motto has only one goal which mainly reflects the history and characteristics of university.Througha classification about the philosophic thought of school mottoes, this paper divide school mottoes intomoral, cognitive and politic three types,and then figure out the philosophic thought that the school mottoesconvey.
