Relationship Between Loneliness And Suicidal Ideation Among Rural Community Elderly In Liuyang

Objective:To assess the frequency of loneliness and suicidal ideation in the past12months among rural elderly in Liuyang. To explore the socio-demographic distribution of suicidal ideation. To analyse the factors with suicidal ideation. To explore the correlation between loneliness and suicidal ideation among rural community elderly. To provide scientific evidences for suicidal ideation prevention and intervention.Methods:By multi-staged cluster random sampling, two townships were selected from33ones of Liuyang, and then two villages were selected from each townships randomly, two teams were selected from each villages randomly. All the qualified elderly of eight villages were taken as theoretical sample. Self-designed general information inventory, LESE, SSRS, PHQ-9, GAD-7, QOL, ADL, ULS-6, suicidal behavior inventory, SCID-I were applied to evaluate all the qualified elderly.Results:1.839elderly were included in the study, aged60and over, answering rate was89.16%(839/941). Slightly more than half of the sample was males(53.4%), followed by females(46.6%).2. Among the839elderly,47people reported had suicidal ideation in the past12months, prevalence of suicidal ideation among elderly was5.6%, prevalence of suicidal ideation for males was6.0%(27/839), and for the females was5.1%(20/839).3.839subjects ranged in ULS-6scores from6to24, with a mean score of8.41±3.74, a median score of6, a QR score of4(P25=, P75=10).4. Chi-Squared analysis showed that, without a stable marriage, unemployed, less annual income, somatic disease, living alone, negative life events, health problems, problems related to marriage and fam-ily life, problems related to social contact, depression, generalized anxiety symptoms, loneliness, lower quality of life, impaired activities of daily life, impaired activityes of physicial self-maintenance, impaired instrumental activities of daily living were associated with suicidal ideation. Binary logistic regression analysis showed that loneliness (OR=1.104,95%CI:1.007-1.198),depression(OR=5.944,95%CI:2.711-l3.030), lowqualityof life(OR=2.395,95%CI:1.119-5.122),impaired activityes of physicial self-maintenance(OR=4.418,95%CI:2.011-8.557) were risk factors of suicidal ideation.Conclusion:1. prevalence of suicidal ideation was5.6%among the rural elderly in Liuyang; The average score of loneliness scale was8.41±3.74, the standard score of loneliness scale was35.04.2. After controlling for demographic variables and depression, loneliness was the independent risk factor of suicidal ideation among the elderly. The higher score of loneliness scale they got, the more possibility of suicidal ideation.
