Objective:To investigate the prevalence of suicide ideation in junior high school students and its relations with personality traits,negative life events, family environment, anxiety and depression.Methods:A total of 1325 junior high school students from Jinan were assessed with Self-rating Idea of Suicide Scale (SIOSS), Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (EPQ), Adolescent Self-Rating Life Events Check List (ASLEC), Family Environment Scale(FES), Self-rating Anxiety Scale (SAS) and Self-rating Depression Scale (SDS). The differentia of demographic characteristics of students with suicidal ideation and those without suicidal ideation was analyzed with chi-square test. The scores of personality traits, life events, family environments, anxiety and depression were compared between the two groups by using t-test. The correlation between score of SIOSS and the factor scores of EPQ, ASLEC, FES, SAS and SDS was also analyzed. And finally, multiple stepwise regression analysis was applied to the data with SIOSS score as the dependent variable, and the EPQ, ASLEC, FES, SAS and SDS factor scores as the independent variables.Results:1. the prevalence of suicide ideation and demographic characteristics of junior high school studentsIn the year before the study,11.2% junior high school students had suicidal ideation, and the prevalence of suicidal ideation significantly increased with the grade. Students from single parent family or foster family had a significantly higher prevalence of suicidal ideation than students who lived with their two parents, or with their two parents and grandparents. Urban Students had a significantly higher prevalence of suicidal ideation than rural students.The prevalence of suicidal ideation were found no significant difference in gender, family economy, father's educational level, mother's educational level, and one or more children of the family.2. The relation between suicide ideation of junior high school students and personality characteristicsThe EPQ scores of psychoticism, nervousness and lie in students with suicidal ideation were significantly higher than that in students without suicidal ideation The scores of extroversion was lower in students with suicidal ideation than that those without suicidal ideation. The totle and factor scores of SIOSS were positively correlated with the EPQ scores of psychoticism, nervousness and lie, and negatively correlated with the scores of extroversion.3. The relation between suicide ideation of junior high school students and negative life eventsThe scores of negative life events was significantly higher in students with suicidal ideation than that in students without suicidal ideation. The total and factor scores of SIOSS were positively correlated with the scores of negative life events.4. The relation between suicide ideation of junior high school students and family environmentThe scores of cohesion, expressiveness, independence, intellectual-cultural orientation, achievement orientation, active-recreational orientation, moral-religious emphasis and organization in students with suicidal ideation were significantly higher than that in students without suicidal ideation. However, but The scores of conflict in students with suicidal ideation was lower than that in students without suicidal ideation. The total and factor scores of SIOSS were positively correlated with the scores of cohesion, expressiveness, independence, intellectual-cultural orientation, achievement orientation, active-recreational orientation, moral-religious emphasis and organization, and negatively correlated with the scores of conflict.5. The relation between suicide ideation of junior high school students and anxiety or depression.The scores of SAS and SDS of students with suicidal ideation were significantly higher than that in students without suicidal ideation. The total and factor scores of SIOSS were positively correlated with the scores of SAS and SDS.6. The multiple stepwise regression analysis of personality traits,negative life events, family environment, anxiety, depression and personality characteristics on suicidal ideation.The factor that entered into suicide ideation regression equation were psychoticism, extraversion,nervousness, lie, academic stress, personal relations, loss, punishment and other facrors, conflict, intellectual-cultural orientation, independence, depression, achievement orientation, organization, anxiety and depression.Conclusions:1. The prevalence of suicide ideation is different from the grade and family structure and living environment.2. Junior high school students with specific personality traits, more negative life events, unhealthy family environment, anxiety and depression state are more likely to have suicidal ideation.3. the following factors have significant influence on suicide ideation of junior high school students:(1)Specific personality traits like introversion, high psychoticism, high nervousness and more Lie. (2) Negative life events:academic stress, bad personal relations, serious disease or death of the relatives and punishment. (3) Unhealthy family environment:low level of intellectual-cultural orientation, independence, achievement orientation, organization among family members; high level of conflict among family members. (4) Anxiety. (5) Depression.
