Missionaries in modern China is a special group. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties,they gradually came to the East, until modern times Chinese portal is open, they began on alarge scale in China. With the Chinese portal opened, most missionaries began the course ofChristianity in China. At the same time, for the universal values in Christian, they initiatemedical care, charity, culture and education in China. With the preaching activities in depth,missionaries realized only for the Chinese glitterati endorsement of Christianity, and by thesepeople to influence other people, it’s possible to produce more Christians, and initiate highereducation in China is a very good way. The missionaries began the course of initiating highereducation in the Chinese therefrom.This paper discusses the role that missionaries played in the development of highereducation in modern China. Affirms the bridge role tha missionaries played in the spread of Westernknowledge, and demonstration role in the process of promoting the modernization of highereducation in Chinese.This paper discuss from the motivation, activities, achievement the missionaries initiatehigher education in China, try to have a comprehensive evaluation of the role missionary group played in the period of social transformation in modern Chinese higher education.Although the activities of missionaries in China are uneven, some good and some bad, but asa special and active group in China, its positive role for the mainstream Chinese socialdevelopment is worth for sure, this is the basic starting point of this paper.
