Research About The Impact Of Academic Capitalism On Engineering Master Cultivation

Knowledge economy and globalization are the most prominent and importantfeature of economic development in today’s world. In this case, higher education willinevitably be affected,"academic capitalism," the new name and the phenomenonappeared to be shipped at the University and has continued to spread quickly.Academic capitalism is defined as faculties and their teachers take part in marketactivity or activity with market characteristics in order to ensure external funding. Tthisconcept is adopted in this paper toinvestigated the effects of engineering graduatestudents. This paper uses qualitative research methods,taking huazhong university ofscience and technology as an example. And eighteen graduate students in two librariesare chosen as interviewees. Each of the two libraries has its owncharacteristics:teachers in A cooperate with enterprises;the professor in B has its owncompany. That is to say,he is not only a teacher but also enterpreneurs. Some ofStudents in B have intershipped in that company. It is obvious that both of the twolibraries are under the environment of academic capitalism.Two aspects are analysed in order to exploring the situation about the cultivationof engineering graduate students:research training and the relationship betweenteachers and students. Training、research subsidies and the evaluation of research areincluded in research training. Characteristics of the relationship between teachers andstudents is significant:teachers are more like a boss and students are employees.Next,this paper compares the differences of the cultivation of engineering graduatestudents between academic capitalism environment and traditional academicenvironment. There are advantages and disadvantages. Two advantages can betold:first,students in academic capitalism have more room to learn how to become aresearch person.second,students have more opportunities to improve interpersonalskills. Four disadvantages can be told:first,the change of the nature of the research leadto the lack of systematic and professional exercise. Second,the change of the purposeof the research lead to reducing of teaching quality.third, the relationship between teachers and students becomes complicated and worse.At the end of the paper,four proposals have been given through two perspectives：first，for teachers and students,they should understand and respect each other、communicate more and cooperate with each other.second,for universities,they shouldset up instructor supervision policy、set up research subsidy system and diversifypostgraduate training mode.
