English reading teaching, which is the core of Senior High School English teaching, plays an important part in cultivating students’ reading ability, especially the capacity of language using. However, the teaching efficiency of English reading in senior high school is still not adequate, in traditional teaching, the teachers mainly focus on the vocabularies and grammars, the reading classes in senior high school are still controlled by teachers and the students are not interested in these reading materials so the students are still poor in English reading. It is urgent for us to figure out a way to solve the problem. The teacher should search a way to train students and inspire them to be involved in reading so that they can be conducted an active and effective reading.Anchored instruction model, based on the Constructivism theory, which pays attention to teaching situation. Anchored instruction is developed by the Cognition & Technology Group at Vanderbilt(CTGV) under the leadership of John Bransford. It sets a realistic problem in teaching content. The ultimate goals of anchored instruction are to foster learners’ problem solving skills and to help learners to become independent thinkers and learners(CTGV, 1990). Finally learners can construct the meaning of information, and gain the knowledge. This teaching mode does not only arouse students’ interest in learning, but also enhances students of independent and cooperative studying.The research on the application of anchored instruction has been applied in some fields while it is seldom used in reading teaching in senior high school. The author in the present research intends to show that the application of anchored instruction plays a positive role in English reading teaching. The main purpose of the research is to testify the following questions and show the efficiency of anchored instruction in reading class.1. Is the model of anchored instruction superior to the traditional model in students’ performance?2. Is the model of anchored instruction helpful to arouse students’ interest in English reading?3. Can the model of anchored instruction cultivate students’ consciousness of autonomous learning in English reading?This study was conducted from September, 2014 to January, 2015. The subjects in experimental class attended the class 4 times a week. In the experimental class the author used anchored instruction in reading teaching, while in the control class the traditional way of teaching was used. The author collected data by the means of tests, questionnaires, interviews and analyzed data by using SPSS 18.0. The results indicate that anchored instruction is helpful to enhance the students’ reading proficiency.It improves students’ reading interest and brings up their independence. It is proved that Anchored instruction is a teaching method which is popular with the students.
