Existence And Crisis

Chinese society has being in transition, Which has a profound effect on individual lifestyles,especially in marriage. More and more women are unmarried beyond marriageable age. "Left women" has become a social existence and provoked heated debate in public. The following questions occur:In the high sex ratio,why China appears the "left women" phenomenon? What are the survival status of the "left women" group in this period ?Public opinion inclined to think that the reason why these women left is their own fault, and formed a series of stigma words on the group. Is the knowledge in line with the reality of the group? If not,why is there such a tendency of public opinion? The study on the growing of "left women",which appears in the wave of social change and reflects the conflict between tradition and modernity, can help us reflect on the problems of society mechanisms and provide guidance for the development of women and society.This paper studies the"left women"groups with the thoeries of marriage,the gender theory and discourse/power theory,and focus on the social construction and self-construction of "left women" from the perspective of constructivism. Firstly, the paper analyzes the reasons of the "left women" phenomenon are because the break of the boundaries of household production and social production,the continuation of the traditional mate gradient,and the reconstruction of social networks. And then, this paper expands the analysis from the self-construction of "left women" to the social construction. As to the self-construction, this paper analyzes the remaining of the group’s marriage, the reality and their lifestyle and points out these women have constructed themselves as an anti-traditional, independent and autonomous group pursuing a single,working and free pluralistic way of life. As to the social construction, this paper analyzes it has emerged a labeling,misrepresentating and Stigma women’s tendency,which is lagging behind the self-construction for the difference in the concept of "leftover ladies" default, the causes and the image recognition. Finally, the paper analyzes the conflict,the order and the resuslts of two constructions. Based on the gender theory, this paper points out the difference between the two constructions reflects the conflict of female gender role under the division of labor changes. There are two different discourses on the "left women",However,Social discourse gradually obscures the women’s own discourse because of "male-centered" hierarchical order and "biased dissemination"order. The social construction of "left women" group reflects the gender domination of patriarchal society,so that it makes "left women" facing a serious crisis including a dual crisis of social identity and self-identity, a double burden of career and family roles,and the exacerbating of gender inequality for social discourse as a symbol of violence,instead of being a normal existence.In addition, this paper put forward it should form a correct perception about the "leftover women",thinking of it as an inevitable trend of society and a free choice of women,instead of a heterogeneous. When they are socially constructed as problem groups, we need to reflect on the marriage and family system, protection of women’s rights and gender justice.
