Cooperation consciousness and ability is the basic quality that modern people should possess.Nowadays, the cooperative learning has become one of the most popular teaching strategies, which is also a trend of modern middle school English education.Cooperative learning is a kind of teaching theory and strategy system of which group activity is the main form. Applying cooperative learning theory to high school reading teaching can change the traditional teacher-centered classroom teaching mode and it is a breakthrough and complementary of the traditional class teaching system. Cooperative learning is an effective method of English teaching, which can promote the development of students’ cognitive ability and the improvement of language ability.The aim of this thesis is to explore the effects of the application of cooperative learning on students’ reading abilities and emotional attitude in English reading class with these researching questions:1.In what way can cooperative learning be adopted to train students’ reading skills in reading class? 2.What are the effects of cooperative learning on students reading skills? 3.What are the benefits that students can obtain through cooperative learning in terms of emotional attitude?The study is quasi-experimental in design. It was conducted in senior one at Nei Jiang No. Six Middle School in the autumn semester of 2014. In this study, class 6 with 66 students was experimental group while class 11 with 68 students was control group. The two classes was taught by the present researcher, use the same book. The mode of cooperative learning was applied in the experimental class while the conventional teaching methods are adopted in the control class. Detail analysis was conducted in the reading class by means of questionnaires and interviews. The analysis indicates that by using cooperative learning methods such as Jigsaw,Learning Together,Group Investigation,etc in the reading class, it can help students use reading skills and strategies more efficiently, which helps improve their reading competence. Cooperative learning can also enhance students’ interest and self-esteem, improve their studying habits and cultivate their cooperative ideas and motivation.
