Communication skill is one of the social adaptation skills that human beings need to possess, and it is no exception for children with mental retardation. However,in real life, most children with mental retardation, especially those with severe mental retardation, have different degrees of communication barriers and need communication training. The Picture Exchange Communication System(PECS)is a type of expansion and alternative communication system. It has positive significance for the development of social and communication behaviors of autistic children and people with communication disabilities. At present,PECS's research results are mainly concentrated in the field of autistic children, and there are fewer research results applied to people with mental disabilities. In this study,a pair of twins with severe mental retardation in the third grade of a special education school in Shandong province were studied.PECS was used to intervene for up to three months.Video recordings and data acquisition were performed.Visual analysis and C statistics were used to collate and analyze the data. The findings are as follows:First of all,the photo exchange communication system is effective for the development of communication ability of children with mental disabilities. It is suitable for children with mental disabilities who have poor oral ability or even no oral ability.Secondly,in this study,PECS developed the spoken language of the two participants, both in terms of the number of oral communication and the form of oral communication, and achieved significant statistical significance. Finally, for autistic children with weak communication skills or communication disabilities, children with mental disabilities and other groups,it is not necessary to complete all six stages of the photo exchange communication system,as long as the communication ability of individual cases is improved. And when you can no longer complete the remaining stages of training, you can stop training or join other training methods.Based on the above conclusions, this study proposes the following suggestions for the use of PECS to promote the communication ability of children with severe mental disabilities:First, for special education teachers and practitioners,You can use a photo exchange communication system to improve the communication ability of autistic, mentally impaired children with communication difficulties.Second, before using the photo exchange communication system to train students,we must do a good job in the investigation of strength compounds, conduct regular inspection of strength compounds, and replace strength compounds in a timely manner according to the results of inspection and verification.Third, when using PECS to train children with mental disabilities in communication skills,it is best to use it in combination with other training methods. It is more appropriate to introduce other oral training methods before and after Phase 4.
