English is an important instrument of communication. As the carriers of knowledge and culture dissemination, English textbooks are the key point of English curriculum. With the progress and prosperity of English education, English textbooks have been developing at an amazing speed. In 2003, one of the most widely used textbooks Go for It compiled by People’s Education Press was published under the guidance of National English Curriculum Standards (2001). With the development of the new curriculum reform, the old edition of Go for It (2003) has been replaced by the new Go for It (2012) because of the release of the new NECS published in 2011. The revision of English textbooks makes the textbook evaluation important. The purpose of this study is to summarize the strengths and weaknesses of the two editions of Go for It and to judge whether they meet the requirements of NECS (2011) and whether they meet the needs of students and teachers by conducting an objective and scientific evaluation of the textbooks systematically. The thesis first conducts a comprehensive textual comparison of the external and internal structures of the two editions of Go for It based on the requirements of NECS (2011). Then it carries out a survey to investigate the students’ and teachers’ attitudes towards the textbooks by means of questionnaires and interviews. The findings of the study indicate Go for It (2003) is compiled systematically and emphasizes the communicative competence, but is insufficient in regard to topics, the order of grammar items, recycling of vocabulary and supplementary exercises. By comparison, Go for It (2012) has made great progress in the choosing of topics, the compiling of grammar items, the amount and recycling of vocabulary. In addition, Go for It (2012) can better meet the requirements of NECS (2011) and the needs of students and teachers than the previous edition. It is hoped that the findings of this thesis would shed light upon textbook compilers and teachers.
