It is known that a textbook is a key component in language program. With the curriculum reform putting into practice, the situation of using only one kind of textbooks for one syllabus has been changed. A Lot of textbooks flooded into markets. Therefore, textbook evaluation becomes very important, because textbook evaluation can not only help to put the syllabus into practice but also gives advice for the educational administration to compile or choose suitable teaching materials. Especially, it can help teachers to adapt the textbooks and provide students a great help with their studies.Senior High English is composed by Beijing Normal University and published by Beijing Normal University Press. It agrees with the essence of latest notion of materials development. With its first experimental edition in September,2004, it is lack of an overall assessment.Firstly, this thesis carries out a document analysis of Senior High English on the basis of some textbook evaluation criteria; secondly, with choosing teachers from senior high middle schools in Beijing Xuanwu District as the research objects, an investigation of Senior High English was implemented. The aim of this investigation is to identify some problems of Senior High English in actual use. This study provided a mixed-methodology (both qualitative and quantitative) evaluation of Senior High English. The data of the thesis was collected from textbooks, questionnaires and interviews. The results show that Senior High English generally meet the requirements put forward by the New Curriculum Standards. It gives more attention to the development of students’capabilities to use language comprehensively. However, the arrangement of grammar items in Senior High English is not so reasonable and systematic. What’s more, the number of vocabulary and activities are also a little large for students. These shortcomings need to be further improved.
