Vocabulary is important in English teaching and learning because it is the foundation of the English language skills. The command of vocabulary has a great influence on students’communicative competence. In the class, students take part in various of activities, so they can get more opportunities to use the language. All the tasks or activities make contributions to meaningful and practical language use; thus it can cultivate the communicative competence of students. At present, lots of time and energy has been spent in teaching English vocabulary in senior school, but the result is not satisfactory. It is necessary to try to find an effective way to solve this problem and to apply it into practice. This thesis aims to try to improve the situation by applying TBLT.This thesis gives a specific demonstration on how to apply TBLT in English vocabulary teaching and try to identify the efficiency of it. First, the author introduces the background of vocabulary teaching in senior school, the object and significance of the study. Second, the author gives the literature review on TBLT and vocabulary teaching. In order to make TBLT understood better, the author gives a brief introduction to the theoretic basis of TBLT. Meanwhile, the author analyzes the methods and principles of vocabulary teaching. Third, to identify the effectiveness of TBLT in vocabulary teaching and if it is more helpful to English vocabulary learning of senior school students and help them improve their English competency than the traditional teaching method, the author gives a research design and classroom vocabulary teaching samples to demonstrate the application of TBLT in English vocabulary teaching so that the readers can understand how to apply TBLT to teach vocabulary better.This study intends to answer the following questions:1. How to apply Task-based Language Teaching in English vocabulary teaching in senior high school?2. Whether the TBLT is more effective to enhance students’English vocabulary and improving their English level than the traditional method?3. What do English teachers and students think of TBLT?94 students of grade one are chosen as the research participants, who are from No.9 Senior high school in Pan Zhihua, Sichuan Province, which is an non-key school as well as an ethnic minorities school. Most students come from rural areas and have lower English level. The participants are from two parallel classes --class 8 and class 9, and there are 47students in each class who are in the same English level. Class 8 is the control group taught that is taught with the traditional teaching method while class 9 is the experimental group who receives the Task-based Language Teaching. On the basis of qualitative analysis of the related theories, the author does the research by test and interview, and conducts a quantitative analysis of the data by SPSS.Finally, on the bases of all the analysis, the author draws the conclusion that applying TBLT in English vocabulary teaching is more effective than the traditional one. Besides, it can help students learn vocabulary better and improve their English level. The author also gives some teaching advice and advises teachers to try to apply TBLT to vocabulary teaching so as to prompt students’ vocabulary acquisition and the development of their English competence.
