Formative assessment has been well known and accepted by many scholars abroad, while it only has a short promotion history in our country. In consequence, it can’t live up to the expectation in extending the width and breadth and the traditional summative assessment plays a dominant role in students’ learning. On the basis of analyzing the connotation and research of formative assessment, this study aims to find out the improving effect on students’ learning competence in the application of formative assessment in senior chemistry teaching.Students of class 1401 and 1402 in Guangxi yulin yucai middle school are taken as the research object, in particular, Class 1401 is the experimental class. In the process, data are collected before and after the experiment. The teacher of 1401 adopts formative assessment to her teaching consciously. There are many ways of the research including class-room observation, interview, self assessment, group assessment and the assessment between teacher and students, which aim at getting feedback of classroom information and allowing teacher and students to adjust themselves and their plans to the best situation in time, achieving the goal of teaching is learning. This study time lasts about 16 weeks and the experiment data are analyzed by SPSS 20.The study finds that:(1) Formative assessment can effectively improves senior one students’ scores in chemistry learning.(2) Due to senior one students’ different learning basis, formative assessment makes different effects on improving students’ scores in chemistry learning. It is obviously to see that students with learning difficulties improving their scores is better than average students, while the average students’ improvements are superior to gifted students(3) Due to sex differences in senior one students, formative assessment makes different effect on improving students’ scores in chemistry learning.To sum up, formative assessment, which is adopted in the middle school chemistry teaching consciously, can improve students’ chemistry learning scores.
