With the development and maturity of network and multimedia technology, online teaching is becoming increasingly popular along with its practices all over the world. Both the success of Khan Academy and hot broadcast of open courses contribute to the extreme popularity of online education. As the practitioners of math teaching, all math teachers have realized deeply that network technology will have a great influence on education and teaching pattern. However, what they care more about is how to carry out online teaching. In the process of practicing online teaching, the first question is how to design online math courses for middle schools. ADDIE model(Analyze-DesignDevelop-Implement-Evaluate), as the general model for teaching design, is the most widely used one, especially for online teaching and distance education. Guided by ADDIE model, this thesis lists the general procedure in designing online match courses for middle schools and also carries out a design practice with the unit Number Sequences as an example in hope of doing some elementary exploration work for future researches. This thesis mainly applies mixed methods which is qualitatively dominant(QUAL + quan), including literature review, questionnaire, interviews and education design research. Through questionnaire and interviews, it gets a general understanding of middle school teachers’ knowledge about online education as well as their needs and suggestions for designing online math courses. The reason why it employs education design research is that somehow this method is in line with ADDIE model and there is a lack of solid theoretical foundation for it.Based on this research, conclusions are as follows. On a macro level, firstly, it finds out that middle school math teachers have positive attitudes toward online tea ching and its advantages. They hold that there is a definite tendency moving toward online teaching. But they hardly know anything about how to design online courses. Next, it is feasible to apply ADDIE model to online math teaching for middle schools. On a micro level, online math teaching offers a new alternative for math teaching at present and it also provides an ideal platform for students’ self-study; a good command of network technology is a must for middle school math teachers in developing online teaching courses. Attention should be paid to details in designing online math teaching websites. At last, correspondent suggestions are presented on the basis of these conclusions as well as the practice of online designing.
