Lead-in, which is the first step of a class, is one of the most basic steps in classroom teaching. It plays an important part in accomplishing tasks, improving teaching quality and achieving teaching objectives. Although lead-in takes up not too much time, sometimes it has a direct influence on the teaching effects. So when introducing new contents the teachers should use a variety of methods to arouse students’ enthusiasm and interest in learning, so as to improve the teaching efficiency.The main purposes of this thesis are to know about the present situation of English lead-in in junior middle school and to find out the main problems. The author makes a research of the lead-in about students from junior grade one and two in No.6 Middle School of Hohhot where she works, and then she puts forward some advice of lead-in according to the analysis of the research results.The author adopted three methods---the classroom observation, questionnaire and interview for the investigation. First, in order to know about teachers and students’ standpoints for lead-in, the author investigated 10 teachers and 120 students with questionnaires. Second, in order to learn the present situation of lead-in in junior middle school in English classroom teaching and find out the existing problems, the author observed 40 English lessons of four different types of classes. Next, the author did some interviews about teachers and students for further investigation about lead-in in No.6 Middle School of Hohhot. Finally, the author analyzed the data collected from the research and put forward some advice of lead-in in junior middle school.According to the questionnaires, classroom observation and interviews, the author found out that the English teachers in No.6 Middle School of Hohhot all used lead-in to start their lessons. And lead-in can really arouse the students’ enthusiasm and interests in learning English and help students naturally get into new content. At the same time, there exist some problems. For example, some teachers have the awareness of using lead-in, but they are lack of theories and methods, so that the lead-in part is just a format or a way to waste time. Lead-in in this way does not play its real role in teaching.There are six chapters in this thesis. Chapter One introduces the background of the survey, its purpose and significance and the structures of the thesis. In the second chapter, some previous studies of lead-in at home and abroad are reviewed. In the third chapter, the author analyzes how to carry out the research. In the fourth chapter, the author analyzes the lead-in in the four different types of classes in No.6 Middle School. In Chapter Five, through classroom observation, questionnaires and interview, the author observes and analyses the current situation and the defects of lead-in in English class in junior middle school of No.6 Middle School of Hohhot. In the sixth chapter, the author sums up the problems in lead-in and some inspiration to English teaching.
