Lead-in is a part of English teaching process, the beginning of a class. Lead-in has many functions, such as attracting students' attention, helping students to get interested and motivated in English class, acting as a link between new and old knowledge, helping students to be clear about the learning aims, playing a role of beauty, providing some important background knowledge and so on. The main theories used in the study of lead-in include Constructivism Theory and Multiple Intelligence Theory. English teachers should pay attention to the fact that students should be centered in lead-in process and teachers should spend the limited time making lead-in specific and interesting. Therefore, it is essential that teachers should not only arrange proper time for lead-in but also take into account the characteristics of novelty and variety in lead-in process. The target language, English, should be used in lead-in process. Interesting methods of lead-in include teaching English poems, English songs, and English proverbs, acting short English plays, reviewing the previously-learnt lesson, telling the latest news, providing background knowledge and so on. Teachers can adjust their lead-in methods according to teaching contents and requirements. Documentary study, questionnaire and classroom observation are means of this research. Based on others' previous study and many literatures, the author tried to sum up the functions, rules and methods of lead-in. In this paper, the author tried to analyze teachers' and students' attitude towards lead-in by questionnaire and study the problems of lead-in by classroom observation. Some suggestions for effective lead-in process have been put forward. The author hopes that the conclusion of this research will help to arouse teachers' attention to the important role of lead-in in teaching process and to find better ways to solve the problems of lead-in so that teachers will find satisfactory methods of lead-in in teaching process.
