Lead-in is the first step in teaching. Although there is a time limit for lead-in in every class, it can not be underestimated. With a successful lead-in, students will be more interested in the lesson and more concentrated, which makes the study easier and relaxing. On the contrary, a class with improper lead-in or without lead-in will disable the students from learning and make great difficulty for them. Therefore, lead-in plays an important part in a class. However, there is only a little domestic study on the lead-in step of a class nowadays, especially on the English classes in junior school. The thesis tries to research on the lead-in strategies of English classes by the way of observation and analysis, hoping to make some contributions to the current teaching theories of English classes and provide some useful information for the teachers' reference.Based on the previous literature about lead-in, the paper first discussed the importance and principles of lead-in. Then after one-term observation the paper summarized some most frequently-used lead-in strategies in the English classes of Oxford English 6A and 7A (Shanghai Edition). Meanwhile, by interviewing the students and teachers in Shanghai Southwest Modal Middle School, the study made a survey on the status quo of students and teachers'attitudes about lead-in in English classroom. The paper summarized the strength and defects of some lead-in strategies and discussed different lead-in strategies in different types of classes. The paper finally made some suggestions on the application of lead-in.
