A Study Of The Relationship Between Senior Middle School English Classroom Environment And Students’ Classroom Behaviors

In the past, the academic studies on the English language class mainly focused on the exploration of specific teaching methods, but few researchers realized the significant role of the nature of the classroom environment and the exchange of social psychology in helping the students reach their learning goals. Researches on the classroom environment are based on Lewin’s psychological dynamic field theory,which points out that human behavior is a product of the interaction between people’s internal factors and the environment. Although there are a few studies, yet from an overall point of view, the relationship between the classroom environment and the students’ behaviors still remains great uncertainty. Therefore, the thesis reports the characteristics of classroom environment and classroom behaviors of different genders, classes and grades of the English class in senior middle school, aiming to discover the relationship between students’ perception of classroom environment and their classroom behaviors in English classrooms of senior middle school. Therefore,the following four questions are addressed:(1) What is the difference between the students’ perception of English classroom environment and their classroom behaviors of different genders?(2) What is the difference between the students’ perception of English classroom environment and their classroom behaviors of different classes?(3) What is the difference between the students’ perception of English classroom environment and their classroom behaviors of different grades?(4) What is the relationship between the students’ perception of English classroom environment and their classroom behaviors?Altogether 210 students of Nanning No.3 High School of Guangxi involved in the survey. The questionnaires are the Scale of English Classroom Environment and the Scale of English Classroom Behaviors. Through the SPSS 16.0(Statistical Package for the Social Science 16.0) software, the results of the statistical analysis are presented as follows:(1) In general, the degree of male students’ perception of classroom environment is higher than that of female students’, however, the degree of female students’ classroom behaviors is at large higher than that of male students’. Male students’ classroom behaviors are influenced by the classroom environment more significantly than those of female students’.(2) In general, the degree of science students’ perception of classroom environment is higher than that of arts students’, however, the degree of arts students’ classroom behaviors is at large higher than that of science students’. Classroom environment dimensions of teacher support, student cohesiveness and competition have an influence on science students’ classroom behaviors more significantly than those of arts students’.(3) The degrees of the perception of classroom environment and classroom behaviors of the students of grade two are the highest, while the degrees of the perception of classroom environment of the students of grade one and the classroom behaviors of the students of grade three are the lowest.(4) The range of students’ perception of classroom environment significantly influence the range of their classroom behaviors. All the five dimensions of classroom environment correlate with all the seven dimensions of classroom behaviors notably,of which four dimensions of classroom environment are positively significant with the classroom behaviors except the dimension of learning pressure which is negative.In view of the above, some suggestions are put forward to the English teaching in senior middle school. For instance, teachers should take pertinent strategies to different genders of the students, teachers should give more support, respect and care for the students, teachers should create more opportunities for the students to participate in cooperative learning and so on. Due to the inevitable restrictions to the research, there exist some limitations. Consequently, some recommendations are proposed for the future research.
