Due to the lack of authentic language environment,classroom becomes the major place where middle school students learn English.At the same time,English Curriculum Standards(2011)stipulates that English teachers should pay attention to students' emotions and affects and create relaxing,democratic and harmonious English classroom environment.Studies both at home and abroad demonstrate that classroom environment has subtle influence on students' personal development.Therefore,it is of great significance to create positive classroom environment for middle school English teaching.Taking one middle school in Yantai as the subject for case study,this thesis focuses on the current situation of English classroom environment in junior high schools by means of the questionnaire,the interview and the classroom observation.This thesis is conducted from the aspects of physical environment(classroom natural environment,classroom layouts,seating arrangement,class size and teaching facilities),psychological environment(teacher-student relationship,student-student relationship,cooperation and classroom atmosphere)and social environment(classroom rules and order)in English classroom.The results show that the current situation of junior high school English classroom environment is fairly good,but there still exists some problems.Firstly,the problems existing in physical environment in English classroom mainly include the lack of classroom layouts,the oversize of class size and the improper arrangement of seating.Secondly,in psychological environment in English classroom,owing to the influence of exam-oriented education,classroom atmosphere is over strained.Students lack cooperative consciousness and the evaluation system is unitary.Thirdly,concerning social environment in English classroom,students' participation is ignored in the development of classroom rules.Based on the analysis of the problems,some suggestions are given to improveEnglish classroom environment from the three aspects respectively.For physical environment in English classroom,attaching importance to classroom layouts and making seating arrangement more reasonable will be needed.As for the psychological environment in English classroom,the suggestions mainly include changing English teachers' teaching ideas,improving their qualities,developing various activities,strengthening students' cooperative awareness and constructing effective evaluation system.As to the social environment in English classroom,teachers should encourage students to participate in the making of English classroom rules.
