English grammar is often regarded as the focus in the area of English language teaching. Moreover, in our country English grammar has always played an important role in English teaching of senior high school. The development of reform and opening-up has greatly facilitated the reform in senior English teaching. Since the New Curriculum Standard came into operation, educators consider that the ultimate aims of English teaching is to enable learners to use English for communication, that is, to cultivate students’ communicative competence. Grammar is part of the linguistic knowledge which is the basis of language competence and the students’ grammar awareness is also based on the language competence in turn. Many teachers pay more attention to grammar exercise.With the New Curriculum Standard of Senior High School applied, English teachers meet another new challenge. On one hand, we should let the students master the basic knowledge firmly so as to make them go through the senior high school easily; On the other hand, we should help them develop communicative competence. Many papers have researched some problems about grammar teaching before. At present, the biggest problems in English teaching is how students’ English grammar awareness is and how to improve the students’ grammar awareness. Only the teachers are clear about this problem, they can adjust the position of grammar teaching and achieve the goal of English teaching in a better way in order to improve the students’ comprehensive ability.The thesis, beginning with grammatical concepts, illustrates the importance of grammar in the article, explains the definition and classification of grammar awareness, expounds grammar teaching from three different views, reviews many related studies about grammar awareness in China, analyses the New Curriculum Standard, summarizes the requirements of grammar ability and grammatical item in senior high students. According to the analyses of new curriculum criteria in senior high students, the author design the test paper. The aim of this research is the current situation of English grammar awareness in senior high students. The research participants are all the students in Grade Three of the senior high school attached to Wuhan University. The data of research mainly were produced by the results of test paper. Through analysis the research, the author finds out the problems of grammar awareness. The following problems:Grammar rules cannot master accurately; Some grammar language points exist a large number of loopholes; Students don’t have a good balanced view of form and function; Facing the questions, Students have a low level of analytical ability; Students adhere to one-sided view to understand communicative ability.Based on the full knowledge of English New Curriculum Standard and the present-day grammar awareness of senior high students, the thesis reflects on the problems that exist in senior high students and also comes up with several enlightenments. We can take the English teaching into consideration, teachers should make grammar rules as English teaching focus; teachers should raise the students’ pragmatic awareness gradually; teachers need to notice the students to keep a balanced view of form and function; teachers also raise their own grammar awareness. From the perspective of students, students have a knowledge of solving their own problems in grammar and use the most suitable way to learn English grammar.
