English grammar teaching is the oldest question in language teaching and one of the hot questions in the current English teaching as well. This thesis makes a study of the English grammar teaching in middle schools. A questionnaire of English grammar teaching has been surveyed with 1200 participants, including 200 teachers and 1000 students in six middle schools in order to find out problems in English grammar teaching.The thesis is divided into five parts. Part one consists of five sections, in which the aim, significance, methods, terms and the structure of the thesis are particularly dealt with. Part two concerns the history and status concerning English grammar teaching. Part three looks into the conception of English grammar, factors affecting English grammar learning and mental process of English grammar learning. Part four focuses on the analysis of the questionnaire about English grammar teaching and learning. The last part presents the conclusion of the research and the implications for English grammar teaching. And the thesis offers some suggestions for the English grammar teaching in middle schools. It is argued that future research should include classroom observation and experiments.The thesis is intended to solve the problems existing in English grammar teaching in middle schools in China and it will be of some help to the upcoming researchers.
