In the course reform of senior high school, grammar teaching and communicative competence have always been a controversial subject for the researchers. With the new curriculum standard of senior high school applied, English teaching meets another new challenge. On one hand, we should let the students master the basic knowledge firmly so as to make them go through the senior high school easily; on the other hand, we should help them develop communicative competence. On the basis of the sufficient explanation of the importance of grammar teaching, this essay mainly focuses on an analysis of the present situation of English grammar teaching in senior high school, a reflection on the problems and some reasonable recommendations. As an English teacher before the application of new curriculum standard, first of all, we should use the textbook flexibly and creatively. Secondly, we should summarize the same grammar points in different units, and then deal with them together. At the same time, we should add other useful grammars or get rid of some grammars if necessary. With the new textbook applied, English teaching gives equal weight to knowledge and ability. We should try to convert knowledge into ability. Therefore, grammar teaching is necessary. The new textbook provides us with a good teaching resource with a reasonable distribution of grammar points. In addition, teachers ought to improve teaching efficiency as well as the students'ability in grammar application; we can take advantage of the contrast analysis to improve the students'ability; we try to make grammar classes interesting so that the students can be fond of English; we can make the best of the computer to attract the students. The students also can be assigned the task in order to improve their communicative competence. Besides,teachers can use the textbook flexibly and improve their teaching efficiency to help the students learn English easily. The students also can improve their communicative ability so as to achieve the goal in English learning in the senior high school.
