English reading section is the core part in senior high school English classroom.Questioning is one of the most common method to achieve teaching goal in senior English reading class. Questioning is one of the best ways to understand students’ learning dynamic,which makes students take an active part in classroom and improves students’ divergent thinking ability. High quality and high efficiency questions can promote the function of questioning, which need teachers’ careful design. Thus, questioning design is the most important in senior English reading class. So it is very necessary for us to research and study the situation of senior English reading class questioning design is and then discuss how to design questions effectively.Firstly, based on reviewing literature, the paper tries to study the situation of questioning design through surveying. The result shows that:(1) students commonly agree that questioning is very important in English reading class, but teachers’ questions do little help to students’ English learning;(2) though, teachers have realized the importance of classroom questioning and frequently used this teaching skill, they tend to follow the traditional teaching mode, which is dominated by teachers’ explanations, without fully arousing students’ enthusiasm and initiative. Most students would rather wait for teachers’ invitation than answer questions actively;(3) Teachers commonly use questions to help students understand knowledge, they can master teaching focuses and difficulties accurately, questions are moderately difficult, however, they prefer designing display question to referential question to test students’ understanding of knowledge points, which are lack of deepness,and seldom stimulate students’ critical thinking;(4) students have great expectations in teachers’ questions about their real life and hot pot of society, which should be take into consideration when the teachers design questions.Secondly, the thesis presents a case of questioning design based on constructivism theory and scaffolding theory, as well as analyzing the teaching materials, the background of text and reading text. The case achieved good result in real classroom teaching. The authorhopes that the result of the survey and the case can give some advice for English teachers who are teaching in senior school in reading class.
