Mathematical theory is the abstract thing in the real world in terms of quantity relationship or space from. Having a certain distance with the specific things in the real world determines the difficulty and complexity on understanding, as well as obstacle. Basing on quantitative research and qualitative research, the study focused on junior school students’ understanding in Mathematical theory, including those status in quo, obstacles and causes. First, the research respectively selected two classes from Grade 7 and Grade 8 in a public school located in a urban city as the investigation object. It adopted spss17.0 to analyze the test data from description and diversity aspects, exploring those students’ understanding by dividing them into three levels——excellent, medium and bad.Second, basing on quantitative analysis, we respectively chose two students in bad level from Grade 7 and Grade 8 to make the Case Study by using tests and interviews. Also, we analyzed the obstacles and their causes which showed on the students who had difficulties in understanding the Mathematical theory. Third, combining with related psychological theory, we came up with effective measures of the understanding of obstacles and suggestions in Mathematical theory teaching.Conclusions:1. Status in quo:(1)Generally, junior school students’ understanding of Mathematical theory is poor. The restatement is the best one and the relevance is the worst among the understanding.(2)There is a significant difference existing in the the understanding of Mathematical theory among the excellent, the medium and the bad.(3)It is common that students are poor in proofs of property and theory,as well as derivation. To use those property and theory is difficult for them. That is because they have difficulties on related concepts, connotation, denotation and symbolic languages.(4)students can’t understand the essence of formulas and rules though they can use them well. And they have no sense of representations in terms of formulas and rules.2. The obstacles of understanding includes memory, language, structure, information extraction and relation.3. The causes of obstacles are as follows: lacking of cognitive resource, indolence of thinking and dependence of resources. The effective measures for students to understand Mathematical theory better should be the follows: to combine specific with abstract, to try to prove or explain the Mathematical theory actively,to use a variety of forms to represent Mathematical theory and to enhance Self-monitoring consciousness.4. Suggestions in Mathematical theory teaching: We should teach students starting with the training of mathematical linguistics; We should teach students basing on relieving cognitive load; And we need to put emphasize on process-oriented teaching.
