In China, it is a transitional stage to teach English in the junior middle school. Students need to change from learning knowledge to learning study methods at this stage. However, influenced by the large-scaled class, it is difficult for the students to cultivate the most appropriate study method for themselves at school. Nowadays, many researchers and teachers have been studying on this issue and put forward some good suggestions. Concerning different needs of the students, layered teaching is one of the effective approaches to take students’ individual differences into consideration and to help students develop better, accompanied by its disadvantages anyway. Absent from the weaknesses of layered teaching which divides students into different levels according to the grades, the recessive layered English teaching is gradually becoming popular in schools.Based on the principle of individualized-quality education, recessive layered teaching focuses on developing every learner’s potential and creating an active atmosphere in class by means of targeted and suitable stimulation for different types of students. The specific process of it includes layered groups, layered tasks, layered homework, layered assessment and layered presentation. Therefore, without layering students according to the score, students would not feel uncomfortable about their self-esteem.Gardner’ theory of multiple intelligences put forward different domains of intelligence and everyone has his/her own inclination of intelligence. According to this theory, this paper aims to study the effectiveness of recessive layered teaching from the perspective of multiple intelligences. The following results are proved by thecomparison between the control class and experimental class by means of the tests, questionnaires and SPSS 16.0.1. The number of students’ inclination of multiple intelligences in class variesfrom one intelligence to another.2. The recessive layered English teaching can improve students’ performance intests in the junior middle school.3. The recessive layered English teaching can enhance students’ Englishlearning interests and awareness of English learning methods.
