The aim of this study is to explore the feasibility of integrating school social work (hereafter SSW) into traditional college student work (hereafter TCSW). By examining the well-done practice at home and abroad, the present author argues that the recognition and support from the department and college-level authorities is an important prerequisite to carry out the integration work. TCSW was developed in the context of China’s highly-centralized planned economy. And it did play a positive role in the past. Thus, practical working methods should be adapted so as not to expect quick results. If SSW can obtain support, how to reasonably position it in current education system should also be seriously considered.Over the years, new problems concerning students keep emerging and display the characteristics of complexity and diversity. Faced with the new problems, the traditional ideological and political education as the main mode of student management falls down. In this respect, with its people-oriented service concepts and flexible solutions, SSW has advantages both in idea and methodology to effectively solve the complicated problems concerning students.By tracing the history and development of SSW in USA, Hongkong and mainland China, the present author analyzes the values, ideas, functions and methods of TCSW and SSW. It is proposed that SSW is of great benefit to the reform and innovation of high education system. This thesis consists of six chapters. Chapter One presents the research questions, the reseaich status quo, the significance. Chapter Two,the framework and the methodology. Chapter Three firstly defines the key terms and then summarizes the development of SSW in different countries and regions. Chapter Four compares TCSW and SSW from five aspects and identifies their characteristics. Chapter Five discusses the necessity and feasibility of integrating SSW into TCSW. Chapter Six sums up thoughts on SSW and puts forward suggestions for future research.
